Messing Around With My Blog

I’ve been messing around with my blog. I added a new blogger to my blog roll and linked her picture. Then I was having so much fun with that that I linked pictures of every blog that I could. You might see a picture of you or your avatar to the right. Some pictures are too big. Oh well!

(Just a picture of one of my Etsy

items to break up the text.)

I tried to ad a Project Wonderful ad box to see if I could make some money to pay for a few project wonderful ads of my own, but it hasn’t worked out. I don’t think WordPress is compatible because it doesn’t do javascript. Project Wonderful isn’t really working out for me anyway. I bid and then I’m the winner and then someone else is the highest bidder. What I wonder is if I bid 5 cents for a day and someone out bids me for the day, do they take my 5 cents and their 10 cents even though we both only got half a day of advertising? I think they do. I gave them $5 of my Paypal money and that’s all they are going to get from me. No thank you. Too much hassle. If you have no idea what I’m talking about I think the address is http://www.projectwonderful.com.

I also took a couple blogs off my blogroll. I like to keep it fresh. Plus, if you don’t update your blog, there is no reason to go back and read the same things again.

I’m rambling, so I’ll go. Take it easy.

Smiles.

Yellow Patchwork Headband by Greenbeansnstrings on Etsy

Every once in a while I come across something so cute I just want to share it. So, this week instead of featuring an Etsy artist, I am featuring an Etsy item: Yellow Patchwork Headband.

I like this headband for so many reasons. First of all, I can tell that it is comfortable to wear. I own a similar headband, and it beats those plastic headbands hands down. It conforms to the shape of your head and holds your hair flat. This is important to me as I grow out my bangs. Secondly, I like it because of the colors. It is natural and sunny. It reminds me of a patchwork quilt and of my hippy hometown, Eugene, Oregon. Finally, I like it because it is homemade. Items crafted carefully by hand are just nice. It’s like they are made with love.

Thank you, Greenbeansnstrings, for letting me share your headband. Visit her Esty shop to see more of her great work!

Update:  I added a picture of the matching dress for sale by Greenbeansnstings on Etsy (4/10/08)

I’m in Love with Memory Wire

I just bought some memory wire, and I love it! I just turn the wire against it’s natural pull and then bead away.

Memory wire holds its shape. So you don’t have to clasp the bracelet or worry about how it will fit. It remembers its shape. When laid flat, the bracelets measure 2 1/4 inches in diameter. But they expand to the size of your wrist. So the same bracelet that looks great on a small wrist, will also look beautiful on a larger wrist.

As you can tell, I had some fun last night. I probably should have stopped at some point for food and water because I was shaking by the time I was done.

I also listed four new pair of earrings. Check them out at http://smilesandsunshine.etsy.com.

New Shop and New Jewelry

I was reading my blog reader and browsed through my new e-friend Aurora’s blog. It’s called Aurora’s Garden. Anyway, she mentioned icraft.ca. I had heard about it before, and thought I’d check it out more carefully this time. If you start listing items before March 31st, you get no registration fee or transaction fees for one year.

So, I decided to give it a try with some new jewelry I made. (Or in Canada, I guess they say jewellery.) Here are the pics of my new jewelry for sale on icraft.
Anyway, if I do well selling and this online place, I might focus my efforts here instead of Etsy. You don’t pay a lot in fees, but you do pay fees.

I wonder if it will get complicated because this site is run out of Canada. I decided to raise shipping only one dollar from domestic when sending to Canada. It doesn’t really cost me much more. On my Etsy, the shipping price to Canada is the same as any other international shipping–double the price of domestic.

Also, because this is based out of Canada, I decided to list my measurements in centimeters, rather than inches.

Well, I hope you take a minute to check out both shops:

Thanks for reading my blog!

Update 7/7/08:  Decided to quit iCraft.  No interest in my products there and I barely have enough time to keep up with Etsy.

Interview with Etsian, Amandalouise

You are going to love hearing from Amanda. I just recently met her on the Etsy forums, and she is so sweet. After you are done reading her interview, if you want to read more, check out her blog: http://mandilouise.blogspot.com. As she puts it, “Cross-pollination among crafters is such a valuable tool!”

—-

Could you tell me about your fabric? It looks special.I am a total fabric hoarder. Much of the fabric I use for plushes is either vintage cotton calico, or newer printed cotton that has been overdyed to soften the bright colors and make it look older. I stain a lot of my plushes with ink, to make them look like they’ve been in a wet attic for a few years. I am enchanted by old, forgotten toys of bygone ages; toys that were made by hand, one at a time, not mass-produced on machines or printed with licensed characters. There is so much love in them, both love from the person who made them, and love from the people who played with them, often playing with them until they fell apart completely, and needed to be repaired over and over again. I want to bring that kind of feel into my pieces, so I never use a sewing machine, and try to use mostly cotton or natural fabrics, though I do experiment with faux fur.

How long have you been crafting? Who taught you?

My mom is also very artistic, and has always encouraged me to make things. I’m a commercial artist by profession, and graduated with a Graphic Design degree, so making art is just second nature to me. The idea of taking something banal and giving it new life as something else fascinates me. There is so much creativity in people!

What you like and dislike about selling on Etsy?

There isn’t much to dislike, for me. I love the community atmosphere, everybody is really supportive of each other. It really provides an outlet for artistic folks who may not have ever thought they could have an internet shop. I’ve had a webstore for years now, selling my soap, but not everybody is able or interested enough to go through the hassle of setting up a web-based store. Etsy makes it available for anybody, and I think that’s just brilliant. I’ve met some great crafters on Etsy.

Is there anything else you would like to share with my readers?

Try and step away from the computer, when you can. I’m definitely an internet-a-holic sometimes, and need to remind myself that there is a whole wide world outside the screen. I take hikes in the forest, I like to watch birds, I love to look at plants and insects. The internet is a great tool for networking and meeting people, and making personal business progress, but don’t forget to observe and absorb what is around you every day.

My Original Doll Pattern

My Original Doll Pattern

I’m so proud of my new doll pattern. I just had to share. I can’t wait for this pattern to turn into 12 dotee dolls for the Months of the Year Dotee Doll Swap on Swap-Bot.

If you want to use this pattern yourself, just ask! I’ll probably say yes!

Here is the address for Dot’s blog: http://dotslifeandart.blogspot.com

She is the originator of the dotee doll.

You can download the picture and use it as a pattern to make a doll. You might note that dotee dolls don’t really have seperate heads and you don’t really need a pattern. Look at the flikr page for more ideas. Or watch the dotee doll video on my blog.

Happy Anniversary to Me

Filed under: Etsy, Family, chocolate, swap-bot — smilesandsunshine @ 9:29 pm

Between Etsy, Swap-bot, and Bookmooch, I send and receive many packages a week.  And, often I’ll come home to a pile of boxes and padded envelopes waiting for me on the couch.  Today was no exception.  I had a shiny red bubble mailer from France and a brown paper box without a return address.

I focused first on the shiny.  I’m expecting an keychain from Paris.  But it was a Kenny G cd.  I’ll not time to talk more about that here.  You can convo me if you like Kenny G and I’ll mail it to you.  Next I moved to the brown box.  It looked simple and plain.  I was expecting it to be from my secret sister at church because there was no return address.  But it did have a location on the postage meter from NC.  So I figured the sender must have left off the return address on accident.  Then I saw the postage was only $.40.  I started wondering aloud how they got away with that and I asked my husband if there was any postage due card with the package.  That had me confused.  It was kind of heavy, but not too heavy.  Oh well, I guess they got away with cheap shipping.  On to opening my “present” as I like to call my swaps and such.

I opened up the package and was suddenly happy.  This swapper knew me well.  I recognized the bottom of a Lindt truffle bag. I yelled to my husband in the other room, “Wanna know what I got?”

“No.”

“That’s okay, I don’t want to share my 60% Extra Dark Lindor truffles with you anyway,” I pouted.   I like it when he shows an interest in my stuff and he certainly was not in the mood to care.   (Or so I thought.)

Then I saw a big envelope.  I pulled it out and started to rip the wrapping.  Suddenly it hit me.  A swapper found out that my anniversary was on the 19th and sent “us” a gift.  I would have to share the truffles.

“Oh, crap!  It’s an anniversary card.”

My hubby came out smiling.  Oops.  That came out wrong.  It was all a set up from him.  The candy was from him.  The card was from him.  He took one of my brown boxes off my shelf, wrote address on it, and taped a used postage sticker to the box.  Then he hid it in my mail.  Luckily he was so happy to pull a fast one on me that he didn’t mind my comment at all.  And he didn’t make me share the chocolate.  I gave him one anyway.

Mmmm…a thoughtful husband and chocolate.  What a perfect day!

An Update on the Letter U

You might have read earlier this week that I am working on decorating and filling my first 32 count matchbox for a Swap-bot swap.

I went ahead and accepted the first letter U bid from Etsy Alchemy that I told you about.  I got several offers in less than 24 hours.  I really enjoyed the process.  Another lady offered to send me a charm just out of the goodness of her own heart.

Since I’m a music teacher, I had some alphabet music stickers lying around.  I gave her the ukulele.  Then I grabbed a set of alphabet scrapbooking stickers from the local dollar store, and cut out the stickers to spell her name.  I also grabbed some unicorn stickers and umbrella buttons from Bi-Mart.  I used some of the unicorn stickers to decorate the matchbox.

Now, I just have to wait for my Etsy purchases to arrive.  (And I have to wait for Spring Break.  Only 1 more day after today!)
